Super Bowl (Or: It’s all over the television)

So, tonight is the Super Bowl. Start time 6:29PM EST. Since the New York Giants are in this one, there is a definite buzz in the air. The grocery store has the usual display right by the front entrance, including chips, dips, and similar snacking items.

But further in, I found something even more amusing…

A foosball table in Shoprite, surrounded by beer.

That’s right, a foosball table, otherwise known as table football. I don’t think I have ever played that particular game, though I think the upperclassmen dorm at the university I attended might have had one – memories are fuzzy.

The “official” Super Bowl coverage started on NBC at 1PM, 5 1/2 hours early if you are counting. But if you’re in this country, you know coverage really started 14 days ago, at the end of the last playoff round. I am looking forward to the game, but it’s also fun to chat about the commercials during and after the game.

Here’s a picture of the chili that I made. It’s good stuff — but it makes even better leftovers.

And when I think of the Super Bowl, I am reminded of the 2010 World Cup (soccer) where the Dutch went to the finals against Spain. This was actually only about a few weeks before I went to the Netherlands for the first time, so Marco actually gave me a little World Cup present.

It’s a little oranje leeuw (orange lion). They were being passed out at the Albert Heijn. Let’s just say the Dutch like the color orange… so much so that it took me a while to realize there was no orange in their actual flag (red/white/blue).

Go sports πŸ™‚ I am less sure why we need Madonna in the halftime show airing right now, but otherwise… go sports!

  1. We still have some of those Welpie lions leftover from when we first moved here. They were given out for the Euro Championship, which is coming up again this summer. We also have a ton of the Beesie furry worms that they gave out for the World Cup. The cats like playing with them. πŸ˜‰ The game started a bit too late for me to stay up and watch, but I did still make a batch of chili for dinner that night, and yes, the leftovers are always the best!

  2. You know it’s a bad sign when you Google something and you have to put one of the words in dutch quotes just so Google recognizes it and doesn’t try to change it to something else: “beesie” furry worms.

Found your original World Cup post with them. Very cute. You’ll be happy (?) to know you are the top result for that Google search πŸ˜‰

    • The funny thing is just how many people still Google them and get to my page that way. I think I have at least one or two people a week coming to my blog by searching for Beesies. In fact, I just checked and it’s my second most popular search term!
