Sugary goodness (Or: A cronut from Albert Heijn)

Apparently cronuts (a crossing between croissants and donuts) were first made in New York City in 2013 (Wikipedia). But I first had one last year, from the Dutch grocery store Albert Heijn. Technically I’m not a huge fan of sweet stuff – I like it in moderation – but this is a nice exception. A few times a year.

Check out Marco’s lovely knife work to show off a cross section of the cronut. So much flaky goodness! And the texture does indeed taste different than a normal donut.

Consider this your public service announcement (PSA): if you live in the Netherlands and have an Albert Heijn nearby, see if they stock cronuts. They come in packs of two. Put it in the fridge for a few hours so it gets a bit colder before you eat it. It’s also great with a cup of black coffee to counter the sweetness.

Although you’re talking to someone who loves storing her gummy bears in the freezer, so maybe take my advice with a grain of salt…

Hamster pasta (Or: Albert Heijn is selling what?)

Here is an unexpected item which you can purchase at the local Albert Heijn:

It will definitely cause you to do a double take! The reason it is hamster pasta is because that is the mascot of the Albert Heijn. The hamster forms are definitely cute but I wonder how the form affects the taste. What I do like is the use of the apron as part of the label – that is nicely done.

Today was a lovely day full of sunshine, no rain and not too much wind. Marco and I even went to Florencia and got an ice cream, our first of the year. I had mocha and Marco had lemon and mango. (Note: I linked to the website but it is pretty sparse at the moment. The website owner left a note that they are working on it.)

Gummy noodles (Or: Interesting finds at Xenos)

Here’s a look at some candy I found earlier in February at Xenos:

Unfortunately I am not a kid that craves high levels of sugar anymore. Maybe I can eat a few noodles a day?

I like shopping at Xenos, though. You never know what you are going to find as the selection is usually fairly random (stuff for the home, cooking, eating and drinking).

In other news:

Groningen egg balls to roll off production line into rest of NL from dutchnews.nl. I’m not a fan of eggs, so that is an easy pass for me.

Happy hardcore Europapa is this year’s Dutch Eurovision entry, also from dutchnews.nl. It definitely has a nice beat going. It’s in Dutch (and a bit of German!), although the news article does a good job of explaining what the themes are.

One long hot dog (Or: A set of plates by Berlage)

Last weekend Marco and I were walking past Berlage Office & Gift which sells – you guessed it – office supplies and gifts. Their window display caught my eye. I just had to stop and take a photo.

It reminds me of my previous blog post where I wrote about a new store I found in The Hague: Meow & Muse.

Meow & Muse in The Hague (Or: Gifts for all the cat lovers out there)

I walked past a new store in The Hague today. Or at least it was a new store for me. It was at Nieuwstraat 120, walking towards the old city hall at the end of this street.

They have a website here: https://www.lovecatsclub.nl/webinar-registration. I’m not sure why that page of the website points to “webinar registration” nor am I sure why it is spelled “Moew & Muse” on the page heading, but the Shop Online tab definitely has some cute stuff.

Here are the opening hours:

Here is a look at what they were offering in the window. My apologies for cutting off the bottom of the card. It said “overflowing with sexy”. Heh.

And another look:

If you have any friends who love cats, check out this place for some cat themed gifts!

Jawbreaker candy (Or: …on a stick?)

Here is a look at how “American” candy is packaged in Europe:

If you see a lot of American flags or the words “USA” on the packaging, I am going to guess it wasn’t actually produced in the US. I took this photo at the Plumule expat store in the Mall of the Netherlands earlier in December. Jawbreakers themselves are a really, really hard candy in the shape of a ball. It’s almost impossible to bite into at the start. Instead you are forced to suck on it for a while until it softens a bit, although that is when they are almost gone. They are also known as gobstoppers in the UK where they originated.

I liked therm a lot as a kid, although it can be annoying trying to get to the point where you can actually bite into them. Maybe that is what the stick is for? Either way, I prefer Warheads candy (Wikipedia). And now I am going down the rabbit hole looking at the Wikipedia page for Dum Dum lollipops

Hmmmmm (Or: Snack machine by Amazing Oriental)

Something interesting that I spotted in the Amazing Oriental on the Grote Marktstraat – a hot snack machine. The machine is sometimes called an automatiek (English Wikipedia).

For the moment the only option looks to be a bag of 10 mini spring rolls for €1.60. You can either pay with coins – exact change only – or with your debit card. Here’s hoping they start offering a bit more variety!

A crossing between a croissant and tompouce (Or: Crompouce)

I was by Albert Heijn recently and I spotted a crompouce. What is a crompouce, you ask? It’s a cross between a croissant and a tompouce (Wikipedia). The latter is a Dutch/Belgium treat that is horribly difficult to eat. I subscribe to the method where you eat the cream in the middle with your fork, and when the structural integrity starts failing you start eating the top of it as well.

And now we have crompouces…

It’s basically a croissant with cream in the middle and the tompouce icing on top. I haven’t had one yet. I might need to have my dentist on speed dial if I try it, though.

Pepernoten beer (Or: Something for the adults)

I recently spotted some pepernoten beer by the local Hema:

A pepernoot is a cookie-like confectionery (see more at Wikipedia). But the red hat symbol on top of the beer makes it clear that this should be consumed in the days leading up to and during Sinterklaas, a Dutch holiday similar to Christmas on 5 December. (Okay, okay, obviously Sinterklaas came first. See more at Sinterklaas vs. Santa Claus from The Hague International Centre.)

The thought of Dutch parents enjoying a beer or three while children unwrap presents during Sinterklaas reminds me of the scene during A Christmas Story when the parents relax with a glass of wine after the kids have unwrapped their presents on Christmas Day.

Oh, and unrelated: I have decided that I am (still) not a fan of setting the clocks back. I’d rather have a dark morning than a dark evening. You can have your hour back!

Funny sandwich names (Or: Eggstra cheesy)

The weather has definitely turned; the cold fingers of fall has arrived. If you’re lucky you’ll get a moment of sun but otherwise it is just wind and rain. Therefore I haven’t taken many photos for the blog of late. So here is one from a month or two ago which I never got around to posting:

It shows two sandwiches which are on sale at the Pathé movie theatre. The one on the right is named “Eggstra cheesy” which is a horrible pun. Good, but horrible.

The one on the right is Boerengezond. That one is less punny and simply translates to “Farmer’s healthy sandwich”.

In other news:

Saturday first day below 15 degrees since May 17; ends record warm day streak from nltimes.nl. 15C is around 60F. It was a nice record while it lasted.

Van Gogh museum stops Pikachu card promo due to “chaos” from dutchnews.nl. They are cute cards (you should check them out) but really, anyone could have known that these would have been snatched up immediately and re-sold by scalpers.

This Dutch company invented sushi krokets (and we’re not sure how to feel about it) from dutchreview.com. (Krokets are breaded, deep-fried rolls usually filled with a sort of meat paste. See also Wikipedia.) This new product is called “crushi”. I am not sure how I feel about it, but who knows. I’d probably try it once.
