In Progress (Or: New York City ads)

Here is another picture from the latest New York City trip. The theme is still “random”!

Johnny Depp advertisement in the making

The ad is for Johnny Depp’s latest movie, Dark Shadows. It was kind of hard to see exactly how the ad was being made as they were actually about 10 stories up (the lower building was mostly cropped out of the picture).

In other news, my latest pondering is one of the forms that I will need to get married in the Netherlands: a legal document that says I am not currently married. With some searching, I was able to find out that it is called Certificate of Non-Impediment in New York City, but that form is only for NYC residents (a pity, since they gave exact instructions and details on how to get it).

Right now it is just musings – the document is only valid for 6 months from date of issue, so I won’t be able to get it until the end of the year anyway. How did you other American expats deal with this one, or did you just wait and visit the American consulate in the Netherlands? Thanks!

New York Public Library

Here’s a picture of New York Public Library. I was admiring the flowers (bloemen) as usual:

Dizzying Heights (Or: Top of the Rock)

The vacation is now over and it is back to the “real world” as it were. It’s at least 5 months until I will probably see Marco again. Kind of crazy to think about, so I won’t, you know?

On a happier note, last night’s post was my 100th post on this blog. (Wow.) It’s been hard at times, but writing posts in advance and scheduling when they will publish has helped me on occasion, especially during the last vacation. The crazy thing is when you start to think about where you were at 100 days ago… it was still winter (sort of), and cold, and I had lots at work ahead of me. Now it is getting closer to summer so it isΒ  bit easier to relax at work — I even helped an elderly coworker book her 3 week summer flight to Atlanta.

Today I will talk about the awesome time Roger, Marco and I had at the Rockefeller Center…

Grote Markt (Or: A busy thoroughfare)

One of the more busy streets in the Hague is Grote Marktstraat, or Great Market street. This is the street where you will find Media Markt (pronounced May-di-ah Markt). That’s the store where Marco bought his fridge and Roger and Marco go almost daily for DVDs (ducks and runs).

sign for Grote Markt

I love the sign above. It looks sort of…damaged, and off-kilter.

Grote Marktstraat

Media Markt is on the right – you can see the red and white pinwheel. The red path is for bikes. The gray paths on either side are for pedestrians.

Of note within this image is the street signs on the left. The top one means “end of walking zone ONLY”, and the bottom one means “bike area”. Personally I would take the top sign to mean “end of walking zone” so no one should be walking there… but that’s just one of the things I have to get used to!

Street signs (Or: Walking zones and prostitution)

Something I found interesting is the street signs that you come across when wandering through the Hague and other Dutch cities. Mostly because I half expect to get myself in trouble one day because I didn’t know what the heck the sign said and I go the wrong way. . .

Here’s an example of one of the signs you will see in the Netherlands.

Dutch sign - Walking zone only

This sign means “walking zone only”, or, only walking pedestrians are allowed here. Marco told me a funny story about that. He said that there were some complaints regarding having this sign up around the red light district, since it featured both a man and a child on it. As if the government was advocating that you take your child there?

He believes the government finally said they weren’t going to change the signs just for one type of area – since that would be too much of an expense and wasted labor removing the old signs just to put the new ones in.

And then of course you have the ‘no smoking’ (marijuana) signs that the Dutch government tried to place near schools and similar areas. The only problem with those signs was that smoking marijuana is technically illegal already. Eventually the government did relent and take those down.

Birthdays (Or: Fun in New York City)

Woot! Today is my birthday, so I am scheduling this post (to publish itself) as we will be too busy in New York City to get online. (Double woot.)

So far this trip we have gone to the Top of the Rock, the 9/11 Memorial, Chinatown, and Little Italy. Posts and pictures coming at a later date.

Today’s plan:

red panda at the Bronx Zoo (from http://www.bronxzoo.com)

We will be at the Bronx Zoo. It’s practically an all day event (or at least 6 hours or so).

And then out to dinner for my birthday!

Counting down (or: 250 to go)

Hi,

This is Marco again, taking over Niki’s blog πŸ™‚
The past week has been a whirlwind of awesomeness as
we’ve had a lot of fun all over the area here.
We’ve been to the mall (once to catch a movie, once for some dedicated shopping)
and we’ve been to New York City twice. One time for a NY Rangers game,
the other time to visit sights and locations we haven’t really been to.

First up was the 9/11 memorial which was impressive. After that we strolled
through China town. Weird, in all our trips to the city we’ve never gone there.
It was interesting. Definitely a lot better than the “China town” near my place.
Which is really just half a street. I’ll have to make sure to get Niki some pictures
of that πŸ˜‰

So today is an important day. We are 250 days away from Niki’s move to the Netherlands.
That means we’re about one third down from when we started the official countdown on January 1st.
There’s still so much to do, though I do believe we have everything under control.
The most “interesting” part is the official documentation that she’ll need.
Like a document in legalese that she is not married. It cannot be older than 6 months (I think)
So…if you get it too early, it might not be valid anymore by the time she moves or at least when she needs it (you know..the start certain legal procedures *winkwink*)
If you ask for it too late she won’t have it in time… So I gues applying for it around June will be the best moment.

Keep in mind the 250 days to go is slightly still on a sliding scale.
It could already be a few days less, it might be a few days more (the latter being very unlikely)
She knows when her last day of work will be, and we’ll stay a few more days after that but not much longer.
So we can pack in peace, visit the city once or twice more..just to unwind before the big moment.

But the actual exact flight date is still up in the air (get it? flight? air? Yeah..lame, I know)
For now, I’ve got my eyes on leaving here on the 18th, landing at Schiphol airport on the 19th.
And yes, there will be people there with a large banner to welcome Niki.
I can’t wait…fast foward please? πŸ™‚

With sympathy (Or: Perhaps they know Marco?)

A few days before Valentine’s last year I was walking home from work. As I entered the driveway where I live, I saw a car pull up, but I ignored it because it is usually for the landlords. Side note: I live in someone’s house, but I have my own entrance and apartment in what conceivably could have been a large garage. However the original owners opted for an apartment instead.

A few minutes after I entered my front door there was a knock on the door. The person was there for me after all! And he was carrying a large bouquet of flowers, part of which you can see in the image below. I can honestly say it was my first bouquet of flowers for Valentine’s ever so I was quite overjoyed. And I am sure Marco was patting himself on the back for his cunning planning, since I had no clue.

Ironic Valentine's Day card within flowers

You can see the card above. Now, Marco ordered them online (being that he is normally not even in the country!). He typed in the message he wanted (Niki- ik hou van jou! or I love you), and someone else at the florist actually wrote it out in pen.

…I think it was the Dutch that threw them off, because they definitely attached the wrong card to the bouquet!Β  Look closely at it.

I must admit I started giggling and couldn’t stop for a long, long time. Perhaps they know Marco and they knew what I was in for? It’s definitely a Valentine’s Day gift I won’t forget anytime soon.

Art (Or: Three guys walk into a train station…)

Sometimes you come across some very interesting street art within the Netherlands. This one is no exception.

Dutch train station art

Yes, that’s three guys – on each others’ shoulders and standing on a ball. At least the guy on the top looks like he is willing to experiment and spread his wings a bit! Perhaps they didn’t have enough money for the train so the one friend suggested that they should all try climbing onto the ball and riding it to their next destination…

In the background the pyramid shaped building is a train station near where Marco works.

Dutch tram in the tunnel

And here’s a picture of a tram in motion within a tunnel. Not sure if this is the underground tunnel in the Hague or not. You can even see a second tram in the background, heading in the other direction.

Wagenstraat (Or: A typical street in the Hague)

Today’s post is about Wagenstraat in the Hague. It’s a somewhat foggy day, as evidenced by the tall building in the background. The street is also close to New York Pizza, which I mentioned in a previous post. Like all public streets in the Hague, bikes and cars share the road.

Wagenstraat in the Hague

The advertisement on the left is for a National Career Fair which happens once a year in Amsterdam.

Wagenstraat in the Hague

The most amusing thing that I remember about those grey pillars is that Marco doesn’t even need to really move out of the way to get over them – he’s tall enough without having to expend any effort!
