Candy (Or: Halloween after a hurricane)

I figured that the students and staff would need a little pick-me-up after the craziness of Hurricane Sandy, as classes only resumed yesterday. And then yesterday’s evening classes were canceled due to the Nor’easter! (winter storm)

Here is the candy that I purchased and passed out today (along with a cute orange pumpkin pail!):

So, there is:

1) Starburst chewy fruit candy

2) Skittles Riddles – (more chewy fruit candy) the flavor doesn’t match the color 😉

3) various chocolates – Hershey’s, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Whoppers malted milk balls, and Kit Kat bars; Nestle crunch (not shown in the picture)

So far I have managed not to eat anything myself. Go me.

July (Or: Crowds, police, and heat)

Lately it seems that it has gotten colder. October is definitely here. I even had to pull out my jacket once this week, as the mornings are getting rather cold. I suspect by next week I will be wearing it every day, unfortunately.

So I was looking at the July 4 pictures Marco and I took of NYC in 2009 (previous post). Heat! Warmth! …and way too many crowds.

See? I wasn’t joking about the crowds. This is part of Times Square, after the fireworks ended.

This was one police meeting area in the early afternoon of July 4. All I remember about this picture is right before that, Marco had made a joke about donuts. 😛

Kruidnootjes (or: OMG! How dare you sell these already?!)

From Marco…

At work we have a large candy jar that we fill occassionally.
The past week I noticed at the supermarket near work that they had ‘kruidnootjes’ already.
So I bought them to put them in the jar. Several coworkers raised an eyebrow. “kruidnootjes in september?”

That’s exactly the reason I bought them to be honest. It makes for fun conversation material, and a good blog post. 🙂 Sinterklaas snacks and candy showing up in stores earlier and earlier. September 1st is the earliest I’ve seen them.

There’s people who claim they cannot do sell them at this point, have to wait until November or something like that. Because these things aren’t summer-food but are tied in to the Sinterklaas thing. It’s not like they’re flooding the stores already (which they do in late November) but there’s a small section already. And they put it in a noticable spot so a lot of people see it (and despite all the complaints pick up some stuff)

Yet the funny thing is, I don’t really understand why they don’t sell things like kruidnootjes all year around. They’re pretty delicious and there’s still plenty of other Sinterklaas candy that can be seasonal. Like chocolate letters (haven’t seen those yet) and ‘gevulde speculaas’ which is a soft type of speculaas filled with almond paste. Very sweet but very good.

Funny thing, I like ‘pepernoten’ better. Haven’t seen them yet. Once I do I’ll get some of those for sure. To erhm write about it in a blog post of course. Yup, that’s the only reason..I swear 🙂

(Note by Niki: yes, Mom & Dad. This is the addictive snack that Marco brought over last Christmas for you guys, which disappeared in about 24 hours.)

From Marco (Or: Christmas countdowns and Zonderland’s gold)

Niki mentioned a few times that for our various trips we’ve had countdown clocks to well..count down to the moment we’d be together again.
When she came over in December 2010 (and only Roger and I knew about her arrival) I decided to mix things up, make an advent type of calendar. Every day a new little ‘treat’, another (lower) number.

It started out as a joke, when it snowed on December 1st, and I drew the number 24 in the snow (24 more days until Christmas in NL)
Then it grew from there and I tried to come up with something new and original every day.
Often the number was either some randomly found digit, a few times I made one myself (like a 17 out of ‘hagelslag’ or a 3 out of jalapenos, or a 24 out of chicken fingers) and I even used a flyer for the pizza place across the street because it had a big seven on it.

The final picture of course, December 24 –one day till Christmas– was taken when Niki was already here (she arrived on the 23rd)
We have only two more countdowns ahead of us. Well, not true. I’m sure we’ll do more.
Counting down until the weekend, counting down to vacations, anniversaries, etcetera etcetera.

Soon of course the final countdown will start (cue the cheesy Europe song) Wooohooo.

In other news; During the Olympics we often get to watch sports we usually don’t see on tv.
Gymnastics is one of them. Today a Dutchie wrote history by winning ‘our’ first ever gymnastics medal, and it’s gold.
OMG. I know little about the high bar, but his routine was so much more spectacular than his fellow competitors.
The aerial moves he did have never been done before (in competition) as he combined 3 difficult moved into one crazy flowing display of awesomeness.

Do yourself a favor, look around for a proper video. And IF you can, watch it with the Dutch commentary.
The man goes nuts, and rightfully so. Amazing. It makes the routine even more spectacular.

[Edited to add by Niki: There’ s a proper video at nos.nl but it’s not viewable if you have an American IP address. Try this YouTube video but it might disappear at any moment.]

July 2009 (Or: NYC fireworks with Marco)

One of my favorite trips with Marco was going to New York City in July 2009 to see the fireworks. It’s odd to realize that it was 3 years ago today. Only two days removed from the job interview that would eventually secure me the job that I have now (July 2, 2009, a Thursday).

We waited at 12th Avenue and 34th street, as that year the fireworks were on the west side in the Hudson river. There were actually 6 (!) barges setting off fireworks from the river, so that millions of people could see them. Both from the New York side of the river and the New Jersey side.

The crazy thing was how fast the area filled up.

Looks like there is a lot of space, right?

(Above) This was the area right after we arrived (around 4:30PM, or so?)

This was the area just over an hour later (not kidding).

The crazy thing to realize is this is only 40% of the action… only 2 of the 6 barges are pictured (we could see another 2 or 3 of them).

You were actually penned in – once that section filled up, the police closed off the area so no one could easily enter (or leave!). After the fireworks were over, the police opened up sections one at a time, so we had to wait around about 5 minutes before they let us out. Nice crowd control.

(Below) Here is a view of Times Square (different day).

This was probably shortly after they opened the pedestrian areas in Times Square, giving us more room to roam and lounge around.

And here was a picture of Offspring, another awesome memory from the trip. Roger found out the concert was happening, and Marco dutifully took me along. Of course he was happy, since Sum 41 was the opening act.

Woot. Awesome concert… awesome memories.

All and all, a fun trip.

My local town is actually shooting off fireworks in a few hours, at 9:45PM tonight… if the rain holds off!

Speculaas (Or: The last remnants of)

One snack I really like from the Netherlands is speculaas. I took home a box that said “Dutch spiced cookies”. They were traditionally sold around Sinterklaas (December 5) but thankfully they are now sold year round. I bought my supply from Albert Heijn. The wikipedia link mentions how they have images stamped on the front (as you can mostly see below), while the backs are flat.

Dutch speculaas cookies

The cookies above are sadly the last bits of cookie I have left from the rather large box I bought. However, in my opinion the trick to making this snack taste extra good is allowing them to get a bit old. Open up the plastic, and close the box again. Let them get a bit softer with age. It’s also very good with the Dutch pickwick tea!

Blue M&Ms (Or: That’s a lot of frequent flyer miles)z

I sort of hinted at this story in one of the comments I left earlier this week. During the early part of 2009 (while I was still studying at Rutgers in New Brunswick), Marco and Roger took their annual trip to New York City. Of course these days, they get to NYC a bit more often since they can crash at my place and not pay hotel prices.

This would also be the Spring of 2009 where they visited in February and April AND Marco came back in late June (June 25, the day Michael Jackson died).  If you’re counting, that’s three trips to the States in 4 and a half months! It was a great Spring 2009, let me tell you.

The first trip, Marco was there during Valentine’s Day. It was the first time we were together for that holiday. As they arrived in the city before I came up to spend time with them, he took the occasion to visit M&M’s World in Times Square. He knew that my favorite color was blue (peanut M&M’s – yum!), so he decided to get me a light blue color and a dark blue color.

A HUGE wall of M&Ms (regular and peanut) for you to choose from. Oddly the smell of chocolate was way more overpowering in the Hershey store than it was here, but that was a much smaller store. — June 2011

The only problem was, when he went to hit the button to release some of the M&M’s, he wasn’t expecting the amount that rushed out. So the first bag was about a pound – yet he still wanted to get me some of the other color. So like any good boyfriend would do, he decided that I must get a pound in the other color as well! (And the prices in that store aren’t that forgiving, either.)

Welcome to the M&M store. It’s not Times Square without huge flashy signs! Even the police station (not pictured) has a neon sign… – June 2011

It was definitely an M&M filled Valentine’s Day…

Queen’s Day (Or: The Hague looks… crowded)

Obviously I am on the wrong side of the ocean to be showing you pictures of Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day), but Marco took some pictures to show me what it is like. I won’t go into detail, except to say that it is the celebration of Queen Beatrix. And it’s a day where everyone loves to wear orange (well, moreso the tourists). You can read an offiical publication for the Hague’s celebrations at the website, haagsekoninginnedag.nl. When Marco sent me that link, he spent a bit of time muttering about why they were mentioning Chinatown, since it is only a street and a half, of which only half of the shops are actually Chinese!

One of the more interesting things for me is the vrijmarkt, or free market, where anyone can sell their wares. Here are some of the pictures Marco took:

Oranje! Go books! (ik wil het oranje boek)

Marco was also kind enough to give a short description of his thoughts about the holiday:

Dutch gourmetten (Or: An exercise in hungry patience)

One of the traditional Christmas activities for the Dutch is gourmetten, where a grill is placed in the middle of the table and small pieces of meat, potatoes, and extras such as mushrooms are cooked. The meal is very social in nature — it can take a few hours for enough meat to be cooked so expect to get a lot of talking done!

The top of the grill is shared. Below are individual grilling areas for each person, where the food is placed on a little spatula. You can also share brood (bread) and knofloofkboter (garlic butter – yum!).

A typical dutch gourmetten meal

Within the Netherlands, it is possible to visit grocery stores (for example: Albert Heijn) to purchase special gourmetten sets which include pre-cut meats. Of course, you will pay a few more euros for this convenience…

Fireworks (or: Blowing up a small piece of the country)

One of the cooler New Year’s Eve (oudejaarsavond, lit: old year’s eve) traditions is setting off fireworks at midnight. When I visited last year in December 2010, the Dutch spent about 65 million euros on fireworks (vuurwerk, singular and plural form). This year it was estimated to about 70 million euros.

part of the set of ground fireworks we purchased

The only way I could describe it in the part of the Hague I was visiting was loud, unexpected noises at every turn, huge flashes, and the need to be very, very careful.

Because there could be unexpected surprises around every turn…

a burning couch on a random street corner

Fun facts: the country’s entire public transportation system shuts down around 8PM that night to avoid issues. Mailbox openings are closed off to prevent “incidents” with lit vuurwerk being placed inside. Christmas trees used to be collected before New Year’s, but now residents are asked to keep their trees inside until after that date, because enterprising souls would take them and burn them on oudejaarsavond.
