Third day (Or: Setting up for Christmas)

This morning Marco and I woke up early (ish!) as we wanted to call IND before the wait times increased. It is 10 cents per minute, so… But when Marco called at 9AM he heard a recorded message that the IND had technical difficulties and to call back later. Long story short, he was able to get a hold of live person after 11AM or so.

As it was the Christmas holidays, the next available appointment was January 11th at 9AM. A bit longer than we had hoped for, but oh well. Apparently since we live in the Hague we don’t need to visit city hall to register there – it is all combined with the IND appointment.

After breakfast Marco and I met up with Roger outside of the Hema, although we first went to Kruidvat (a store like CVS or Walgreens in America) and Xenos, a high end thrift store. Finally, we made a stop at Hema to pick up the Christmas tree that Marco ordered, as well as some extra Christmas ornaments and hooks.

Afterwards we went back to our place (!) to watch some random tv (wrestling and tv shows). At the end, Marco and I started to put the Christmas tree together. We mostly finished it sometime after Roger left for the night, although Marco wants to wait another night before letting me take a picture since he is a bit of a perfectionist about such things it seems. 😉

Second day (Or: Settling in and unpacking)

A pretty uneventful day (sort of). All three of us are definitely under the weather, though Marco has it the worst. But in my case it was probably just from the traveling with heavy luggage and the plane ride that did me in – I wasn’t really feeling it until Saturday when we went to the city.

Marco and I finally dragged ourselves out of bed around 11:30am, after dozing on and off most of the morning from 8:30am onwards. After that, we made some brood met pindakaas (peanut butter toast – yum).

We watched an episode of Seinfeld (American dialogue, Dutch subtitles, as is normal around here for US shows). One of the themes in this episode was the “second spitter” which was a parody of the “second shooter” theory in JFK’s death. I have seen maybe half of the episodes (or less), but I do remember getting a season for my brother all those years ago for Christmas. Afterwards we switched the channel to VH1 classic as I know most of those songs. I haven’t kept up with the modern stuff over the years as radio isn’t as prominent now that we have the internet and I don’t drive/have a car radio.

We also made a to-do list, manually for stuff to get at the Albert Heijn and for miscellaneous stuff to get in the coming weeks (have a key made, get a tram card, etc). We plan on calling the IND tomorrow regarding the next step, as some of the info he has in Dutch conflicts with my info that I received from the NY consulate in English. Not a problem though – it says we have eight days to get it all sorted.

Another fun thing I did was change my personal location on some of the websites I visit frequently. As I lived in Pearl River, NY which was a rather small town, I never really wanted to broadcast where exactly I was. But now I can write that I am an expat in the Hague, since it is a city of half a million people or so. 😉

Other things I was not expecting was CNN to automatically switch to the international edition, etsy.com to only show me items were shippable to NL and have all prices in euros, and Google to switch to the Nederland edition automatically. I at least figured out how to switch Google to the English menu, although it isn’t truthfully needed beyond not realizing that afbeeldingen meant Images in Dutch (versus foto which I am used to seeing).

We also worked on unpacking my luggage and putting it away. Admittedly now one of the drawers under the bed is definitely a “junk drawer” but it works for me for the moment. It is an awesome bed from Ikea with four drawers underneath, two on each side.

At some point later on we are going to go to Albert Heijn and pick up some food and other related toiletries that I will need in the coming days. Thankfully Albert Heijn doesn’t close as early as many stores do (most stores only stay up late on Thursday nights).

Marco also boiled some water for me in his water cooker so that I could have some Pickwick Dutch tea. It was very, very good and helped take some of the soreness and headache away. Two cups!

First day (Or: Tired but here)

So I have arrived. Marco and I are alone, after the guests have all said adieu and gone home.

The first flight was JFK to Dublin. In the morning, Roger, Marco and I checked out of the New Yorker hotel around 10am (which pretty much meant just dropping off our room keys in the key drop near the elevator). Then we went and had a late breakfast at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, a 1950s retro themed restaurant where the waitstaff sing at you. I had a Brooklyn bagel, which was a bagel with scrambled eggs and American cheese on top. The singing was fine – it was mainly the waitstaff walking around with a microphone singing.

Eventually we made it back down to the New Yorker hotel and grabbed our bags from storage, and then made our way on the Long Island Railroad to Jamaica station. Once there, we transferred to the air train which would take us to JFK. At least it was much more spacious than the air train that connects the NJTransit stop to Newark airport, the airport we usually use.

I didn’t have any issues at all dropping off my luggage at the Aer Lingus desk, and the lady also helpfully printed our boarding passes for the next flight (Dublin to Amsterdam) as that had not been an option on the website. Security was annoying (when isn’t it?) but nothing that we haven’t seen before. We then waited around a bit for our flight to take off.

On the flight over, Roger and Marco managed to get some sleep (a bit – not great) but I mostly just dozed. Roger and I used the inflight entertainment option to listen to some music. The options were okay but not great, but admittedly I need to listen to more music. It also took forever to get from page 1 to page 24, for instance. But it was good otherwise.

We then arrived at the Dublin airport just after 5AM, as planned. We ended up sitting up on the 4th floor somewhere outside of the Burger King, where we camped out waiting for them to tell us what our gate was. And waited. And waited. The gate opened at 8:40AM and the gate number flashed up on the screen just after 8:30. Crazy.

We also had a delay with the flight, boarding at 9:25AM for our 9:30 flight. I started to doze off more heavily here, although I was jerked awake by the announcements at times. But we still only arrived 5 minutes late, although taxiing from the remote stretch of land that is the outskirts of Schiphol airport took at least 10 minutes. No joke.

Getting through passport control was a breeze. The worker asked what my purpose was for coming to the Netherlands, and I said to move. I then told him to look in the back for my MVV sticker, which he stamped and said I was good to go. So very anti-climatic…

After that we grabbed our luggage and made our way to the arrivals hall, where Marco’s mom was waiting to greet us. After exchanging some hugs and pleasantries we then made our way to the train which we took home to the Hague. Marco’s dad and his wife were waiting in his apartment. We chatted for a while, sharing banketstaaf (“bread” with almond paste in the middle).

After the house guests were gone, Marco and I napped for a while in our new bed (very firm!). Sleep is good – we definitely have our priorities straight!

Wrestling (Or: Ring of Honor and WWE)

From Marco…

Sunday is our last full day in the States.
So obviously we’re spending it at home, taking it easy, enjoy a good home made meal, right?

Wrong. Today we’re overindulging on wrestling. Lots of it.
And the good stuff too. We’re attending two ‘pay-per-views’ on one day. Six hours in total.
Meaning “the important shows of a wrestling federation”

First, in the early afternoon we’ll be seated in the 2nd row for Ring of Honor’s “Final Battle 2012“.
It’s billed as “Doomsday” which of course is a nice tip of the hat to the Mayan thing..
But well..it’s going to be fitting as we get some hellacious matches.
Niki doesn’t know many guys that are appearing (none except 2 names) but when she saw my enthusiasm for things like the American Wolves reunion, the 3-threat tag match involving the Briscoes and of course the ‘ladder war’ match between arch enemies El Generico (the Generic Luchadore) and ” wrestling’s worst nightmare” Kevin Steen, she agreed to go (I also promised to protect her from any blood, sweat or wrestlers flying around)

But the fun doesn’t end there. After the show is over, we make our way to Brooklyn for WWE’s TLC ppv.
WWE is obviously a size bigger than ROH, and they themed their ppv event ‘Tables Ladders and Chairs’  (oh my!) We won’t be on the 2nd row, but still have great seats.
There’ll be a variety of fun matches. One where tables are legal to use, another one features chairs and well..one of them where all 3 of them are legal 🙂 Now I know you might think this is all very brutal. But no worries. There’s actual wrestling happening too. 3 great matches that should feature lots of flying, jumping and wrenching of body parts. Yay. Since Niki watches WWE on a regular basis, she knows who’s who and why they are fighting. That always helps to make it more entertaining 🙂

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. I’m lucky Niki likes a lot of the things I like. Sports, wrestling, and food *giggle*
So after this crazy day, we’ll get ready to fly back to the Netherlands on Monday.
I’m sure you’ll hear all about that in the next few updates 🙂

Christmas (Or: Trees around New York City)

Continuing the tree theme of the previous post, I also took a few pictures of various decorated trees in New York City.

The first photo was from a distance as I had to get to the consulate. But it is the Macy’s Christmas tree at the main entrance. The “yellow blob” is actually the word “Believe”, which could be seen in the Macy’s parade for Thanksgiving Day.

Macy's Christmas tree in NYC

Taking this picture when I went to the consulate also helped out last Friday, since I popped out of the subway on the other side of this street. But as I saw the Macy’s decorations to the left of me, I knew to go left down to the street to get back to Penn Station.

The second tree was on 39th street and 3rd. There were actually 4 lighted trees, although I was only able to photograph one of them.

The morning itself was dreary…as you can tell from the wet roads. Drizzling on and off most of the morning.

Another good tree to see is the one in Bryant Park, with blue lights. But that is another day. And of course the tree in Rockefeller Center…

Lights (Or: Local Christmas tree at dawn)

This picture was actually taken the morning that I went to the Dutch consulate to pick up my MVV sticker. The last time that I had gone, I had taken a slightly later train but found myself running through New York City to get to 3rd avenue in time.

So this time I took the 6:45am train, which meant leaving the house just before 6:30. (The little bit of extra time meant I could mail a few Christmas cards to send out to people.)

But under the cover of darkness, I was able to get a photo of the town’s Christmas tree by the train station.

It was nice to be in the city so early, as it meant I didn’t have to run across the city to get somewhere on time, be it the consulate or the bus terminal to get back to work. My feet definitely thanked me for going for an earlier train this time.

Today is my last day. And it is also the Christmas party at work, which Marco has graciously decided he would attend. (Graciously, since he might get a few dirty looks for stealing me away!)

Disconnected (Or: Lack of internet)

Yesterday night I called to disconnect the internet, effective Friday morning. Thankfully I have had it for three and a half years, so I don’t have to worry about an early termination fee! Originally I thought I would have to cancel it last week, as Verizon agents said typically they want their router back. Most people request that a shipping label be sent to their house, but that takes time to arrive in the mail. And the label cannot be generated until the account is terminated… Coupled with a less than quick mail service (things tend to take a while to get into my hands) I thought I would have to cancel things much earlier.

But in the end I made some calls and figured out exactly what Verizon stores the router could be sent back to. One of my coworkers graciously volunteered to return the router to the store in person for me. One less thing to worry about! A few more to go.

It is going to be weird not to have any internet. As a society, we have definitely gotten used to internet at our fingertips at any given moment, although I only have a prepay phone (not a smartphone) and an iTouch, so I am not as embedded as some people are outside of the home. While I will have internet at work, after Friday afternoon there will be no more of that. Thankfully we are staying in the New Yorker hotel near Madison Square garden this weekend and they have a free check-in service for flights, so we are covered there!

Counting Down II (Or: #finalcountdown)

From Marco…

Yesterday Niki wrote about her final days ‘here’.
Today it’s my turn to give you a bit of insight..

While I’m a hothead and usually not a patient person,
I am actually quite cool and relaxed under pressure..but not this time around.

Last week when I was working on my apartment I felt overwhelmed, no clue how to start and what to do..
This week I’m much better. Well doh, obviously.
With the help of my friends & family it all worked out fine 🙂

So now the final countdown is really on. Niki got her mvv, my place is ready..
We’ve had fun so far at the mall and just hanging out etcetera.
But there’s also been some “serious” moments .. we’ve done a trial run of packing our suitcases.
It seems 90% fits in Niki’s and my own luggage. So that means that if we use the extra space in Roger’s luggage too we won’t need to use any extra space and thus pay for it.

Time’s going fast..today it’s already Wednesday (oooh new comic book day) and Roger and I will head into New York for some random fun. Once we get back, we will pack our suitcases for real this time, and then head back there WITH Niki on Saturday.

Yup. Time to put ‘the Final countdown’ on repeat on my ipod.

Counting Down (Or: Under a week)

Three more days of work, three and a half more days in Pearl River… the countdowns are getting more numerous by the minute it seems. (In fact, today might have been the last day I needed to trudge up the hill, as I am probably getting rides home the rest of the days. But we’ll see…)

Work has been going pretty good. I still need to clear off parts of my desk, but I did the major bits of it last week. I finished a long-ago-promised project for the psychology department, and can deliver the .avi file tomorrow at some point. I still have 10 or so reminders popping up every so often in Microsoft Outlook, but the number of those is dwindling as well.

After work entertainment has also been good. Yesterday was a relaxing day at home eating beef stew (prepared the night before and placed in the slow cooker in the morning) and watching various tv shows. Tonight we went to the Palisades Center. I got a hair cut and we visited our favorite stores and said our final goodbyes to the mall. It’s been a good place to go over the last few years, all four floors of that gargantuan warehouse-like building. Mainly I will miss the convenience of tons of stores in the same place! One stop shopping to the extreme.
