July (Or: Crowds, police, and heat)

Lately it seems that it has gotten colder. October is definitely here. I even had to pull out my jacket once this week, as the mornings are getting rather cold. I suspect by next week I will be wearing it every day, unfortunately.

So I was looking at the July 4 pictures Marco and I took of NYC in 2009 (previous post). Heat! Warmth! …and way too many crowds.

See? I wasn’t joking about the crowds. This is part of Times Square, after the fireworks ended.

This was one police meeting area in the early afternoon of July 4. All I remember about this picture is right before that, Marco had made a joke about donuts. 😛

Changes (Or: The dreaded “female touch”)

From Marco…

Niki’s arrival is coming closer and closer. And with that, the changes to my apartment.

My bedroom will be redone (it currently has a one person bed and obviously I’ll need a bit more closet space). But the biggest changes will be in my living room. I will be getting a new pair of couches (the current ones are at the end of their life cycle) which I am totally cool with.
But beyond that..we’re going to have to try my single guy’s room into a couple’s room. As you can see in evidence A below – the picture of my DVD cabinets I have a large collection of movies. And while Niki’s fine with that and is looking forward to watching (some of) them with me, is she okay with adding another one of the huge cabinets, letting it dominate one side of the room? Well, it already dominates one side..but maybe they’ll conquer another wall as well..

Then there’s evidence B. My tv set-up. There’s an xbox, dvd player, blu-ray player and even an old vcr which isn’t even hooked up anymore. (And actually another dvd player that isn’t working/not hooked up)
Not pictured is the stereo that connects my 5.1 sound system.

Packing (Or: She’s about to take over)

From Marco…

So my trip is almost coming to an end (I’m leaving on Tuesday) and obviously I’m not thrilled about it.
But unlike pretty much all of the previous visits (both mine and Niki’s) this time it feels different.
Of course there’s the fact that we both know it’s going to be about 70 days until we’re together again. I think it will be one of the shortest periods between seeing one another (I think the shortest was in 2009). But most important, we know this will be the last time I fly to the Netherlands without her.
The last time we have to say goodbye at the train station or airport.
Knowing that makes it a bit less sour and annoying.. 😉

One of the worst things at the end of each visit is packing up my stuff again, back into my luggage. It’s always a sad moment…

But this time it was a bit more amusing and maybe..dare I say…entertaining.
We spent some time this weekend packing up some of Niki’s belongings to see how much suitcases and such we’re going to need at the end of this year.
It seems that if I manage to bring as little as needed then we just might be able to squeeze everything into three pieces of luggage and two-three items of carry-on.  Cool.

I am bringing some stuff over already though. Just some books, some spare shoes and such.
That means the moment is here. She’s about to take over my closets, impose her will on the layout of my apartment.. oh boy. I’m looking forward to it 🙂

Bugs (Or: Is your butt on fire?)

A few days ago I wrote a blog post for Niki that I sent to her even before I came over. Today I’m writing this life, while tied to her fridge. No, just kidding..I’m lying down on the floor as I often do at her place.

For a week or so I wanted to write about the crazy subject of bugs. I have several fun memories of Niki attached to some of those sometimes bothersome little creatures.

There’s the one about her first day in the Netherlands ever. We went out for a walk, and ending up on ‘ het plein’ which is a famous place in The Hague, right next to the Binnenhof. The statue of ‘Willem de zwijger’ is in the center of the square.  As you might recall there is a copy of that statue in New Brunswick where Niki studied.

Red earrings (Or: Our first official date)

On one of the trips where Marco and Roger visited, I was coming home from work on the bus. I remember getting off the bus, and seeing Marco there dressed up.

He led me to a quiet corner off the main path and said he had something different for me today. He had made a reservation at one of the local restaurants for us to have dinner together. How sweet! He had scheduled the reservation for a bit later, so we had some time to kill.

He led me to the local park that was on the way to the restaurant, and we sat down on one of the park benches. (Every time I pass by the park I think of this moment.) He said he had something for me. I was feeling positively spoiled and loved by this point. Not that I didn’t feel that before… But he pulled out a little bag, and inside of it was a pair of red earrings.

Now, a little bit about these earrings – I had been hinting for a while that I needed some red earrings to match one of my work outfits. It’s a running joke that I want earrings that match outfits in color. He knows I like earrings that dangle. I think he did an awesome job picking out these earrings!

After it was time, we headed off to the restaurant. It is actually an old house, since renovated. So each room only has one or two tables in it. It should be very cozy and private, although they seated a rather large table next to us and they were a bit boisterous. But c’est la vie.

(A side note… earlier in the trip, Roger, Marco and I were walking to Shoprite, which goes right past the restaurant. I was walking in front of them and said Oh look! It’s the expensive place! as that is all I had heard about it. Apparently Marco and Roger exchanged uh oh glances, as Marco had already made his reservation. But after a quick check of the menu online, Marco was relieved to find out that my definition of expensive isn’t… expensive.)

I don’t remember what I actually had as a main meal, but I can tell you the soda (pop!) they served was flat. I should have said something, but oh well. But the dessert was great… a cup of coffee (cappuccino?) with a fancily-spun stick of sugar to stir it with.

And of course the only awkward moment for me: I apparently suck at sitting down properly if a guy is trying to be a gentleman and push in your chair for you. But we survived, and had a laugh.

It was a great memory. It is nice that I walk past the restaurant and park at least once a week to be reminded of it.

Alterations (Or: Dutch for dummies book)

A few years ago, long before we decided that I would move to the Netherlands, Marco got me a Dutch study aid. It was from the popular “for dummies” book series.

Of course he felt a bit weird calling me a dummy, so he decided to alter the title a bit…

It makes me grin every time I see it!

Handmade (Or: A Dutchie’s jigsaw puzzles)

Back in late October 2009, when I had only lived in this current apartment for a few months, Marco had to buy a birthday gift for a friend’s young child. While searching for a gift in a store, he came across blank puzzle pieces.

On a whim, he purchased four jigsaws and drew some images and phrases on each. He then had the bright idea to mail them to me a few at a time! So it was a while before I could complete the puzzles, though not forever.

“ik ben van jou” -> I am yours.

Funny story about the phrase above – he taught me two phrases back before I really started studying Dutch at all. “ik ben van jou” – I am yours – and “jij bent van mij” – you are mine. As I had zero grounding in Dutch, he was teaching me to remember it based on memorization, so he said “jij BENT van mij”, while making a bending motion with his hands.

So for whatever reason, that phrase reminded me of driving a car, with your hands on the steering wheel. So for a long time I could only differentiate between the two (ben vs. bent) by thinking of which one was where you were driving.

And this second jigsaw puzzle is proof that we have always been counting down days until we see each other again. At the bottom you can see the “80!!’ for 80 days. That would have been the Christmas trip where they visited my new digs for the first time.

By the way – it is 28 days and about 20 hours until we see each other again.

Not that we’re counting.

Little things (Or: Exchanging grocery keychains)

After Marco wrote the blog post about the Hello Kitty keychain, I thought about a few other keychains he and I have given each other. Slightly more practical, but not really…

At one point, I thought I had lost my Shoprite card, so I went to the grocery store to ask for another one. They said they would mail me one, but it would take 4-6 weeks, and that in the meantime I could use my phone number. Sometime in those 4-6 weeks, I found the card and forgot all about the ones that were to arrive in the mail.

But arrive they did – so I had the brilliant idea to give one to Marco. I believe I did so near the end of one of the trips, probably when he was about to pack his luggage. (Though my memory is a bit faulty at times!) He was thrilled, even if it really only has a use for about 6 weeks out of the year. But it does have some use, since occasionally I am at work when Roger and him visit so they need the card if I instruct them to do the grocery shopping!

At the bottom you can also see the tip of a blue key. That’s actually a key made from a New York Rangers mold… and its one of the copies of my house key. So technically he can get in whenever he wants, if there wasn’t an ocean in between.

Shortly after I gave Marco a Shoprite card, he gave me a keychain card of my own.

An Albert Heijn bonus card. Which will probably find a lot of use in about 4 months…

Hello Niki (Or: Wait..was she somehow trying to tag me as her property?)

From Marco…

A short time before Niki and I met, a friend of mine visited Japan.
We joked that she should bring me a Hello Kitty phone charm and that I’d attach it to my phone.
I expected her to forget but she didn’t…
Being crazy enough to be a man of my word in situations like this, I hung the charm as promised.
If I remember correctly it was a little rocker H. Kitty.

At some point in the conversations with Niki I showed the charm (possibly already at the first convention we met, but it might’ve been at another one).

Maybe to give the impression that despite being big and evil, I was not above being silly and cute 🙂
Or maybe it was just a simple and fun topic “hey look, I am crazy, I have a girlish charm on my phone”
I’m not sure if it helped to impress her, but she definitely remembered it.

Because some time later, the cord of the charm broke, so I took it off the phone. Then, not long after that, I got a gift from Niki.
A new Hello Kitty figure holding a pink heart with an even tinier little heart dangling next to it.
At this time we were still “just friends” but now I have to wonder if she wasn’t secretly claiming me already*grin*

To prevent scratching the enamel*, I put tape over the figure & heart. Though the heart has some scratches anyways..

She said I could use it to replace the other one but since it was a bit bigger than the original I decided to hang it from my key chain. (also the original was more of a small figurine, while this is more like a flat charm, I’m sure there’s an actual word for it)
It’s been on there ever since. Usually when I take my keys out of my pocket when I get home from work my fingers search for it just to make sure it’s still there.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a good luck charm or anything like it, but I got it from Niki, so obviously it’s dear to me.

* I had to look up enamel since it’s not an every-day word. Fun fact, in Dutch it’s email (or emaille in French)
Ooops. I bet not many people use it for THAT meaning these days.
