Serial the podcast (And: Other technological thoughts)

Lately I’ve been searching for something to listen to during my time at work. Previously the most success I have had was with Radio 1, the public service radio channel in Dutch. There is something to be said for having Dutch piped into your ears for hours on end when you are trying to learn the language. With that said, you’re tied down to whatever they are talking about at that moment – and sometimes it can be a bit boring. A little variety is nice.

On Thursday I re-found a podcast, “Serial“. It is a non-fiction story told out over multiple episodes. I had seen it several times over the last few months as I looked for podcasts but hadn’t listened to it. Apparently it was #1 for iTunes podcasts before the first episode even aired. Or something like that. Season 1 is twelve episodes long. It covers the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee and the former boyfriend who was convicted of killing her and sentenced to life in prison.

What makes this podcast interesting is the use of actual interviews, recorded phone calls and court room testimony. It is not the voice of one person but the voice of many. Since the events are real, you can’t help but feel like you shouldn’t be listening, like this is private. It’s an interesting feeling.

I only started listening to podcasts within the last year or so. While I do feel like I grew up with technology — there were computers at my elementary school and I was online regularly by 11 or 12 — I can definitely feel the divide between my generation and the digital generation. I still prefer email over texting. I don’t follow much of the latest crazes like Vine or Snapchat. Never tried Instagram. I had a twitter account, but deleted it after it got hacked (used the same simple password for that as well as a message board password, and the board got hacked first). I didn’t grow up with an iPad in my hands from birth or a pressing need to have a smart phone by age 7. I didn’t get my first cell phone into high school (Nokia, I believe) and didn’t get a smart phone until 2013.

So I can relate to older generations – I can only imagine what technology is going to confuse the heck out of me in 50 years. Heh. Get off my lawn, and just give me my iPad…

Crib puppies (Or: At the Fox Valley Mall)

One of the places that we visited during our trip to Chicago was the Fox Valley Mall, which is in one of the suburbs.

There is a store to buy… puppies! Of course all of the puppies are showcased in baby cribs. Can’t have it any other way.

The one big rule is that you do not reach in to pet the puppies – although when we were there, there were two girls who oooh’d and ahhh’d as they reached in. The puppy calmly rolled over and let its belly get scratched. (A few seconds later a worker came over and politely asked them to stop.)

A bundle of cuteness, though who knows how long they have to wait in the crib before being taken back to the backroom and allowed to rest away from the prying gaze of people. I’ve also always found it a bit odd that there isn’t much of a blanket for them to lay on, though I am sure accidents are frequent in this line of business.

But they sure are cute.

Debt free (Or: Student loans paid off

Woohoo! It took nine and a half years but my student loans are now paid off.

As a present I am treating myself to an iPad Air 2. My first tablet ever. 🙂

We’re off to Chicago tomorrow, visiting family for the holidays.

Another reason to learn Dutch (Or: Fraud detection)

Marco came across a funny news story about a women in Florida who had apparently slipped on the wet floor of Target (a retail store like Hema but on a larger scale) last year. She complained of neck, legs, back and shin pain. Sounds awful.

Except that is not what happened.

After she got the attention of some of the Target workers, she called her mother and told her in Dutch that she had simply sat on the ground and was looking for insurance money. There is no problem calling her from the store, right? I mean, there are only about 17 or 18 million people in the world who speak Dutch…

Turns out one of the workers spoke Dutch. Ouch!

Upon reviewing the security footage, Target was able to clearly see that she simply sat down on the ground and she was charged with insurance fraud.

Lounging around The Hague (Or: Cute kitty)

Over the weekend Marco and I were able to get a photo of a kitten. This was a remarkably calm cat who allowed us to come within a few feet of him (we had to walk past) and didn’t mind having his photograph taken.

Tijd om te stemmen (Or: Who shall you choose?)

Today was local elections in the Netherlands.

Of course I can’t vote yet. For the national elections you need to be a Dutch citizen. For the local elections expats can vote if they are from an EU member country, or non-EU members can vote if they have lived in the Netherlands for 5 uninterrupted years. Read more (English).

Frozen America (Or: For once I appreciate Dutch weather)

The current weather in The Hague is a balmy 13C. That’s about 55F. I will admit it is a bit windy though…

The current weather in the midwest where my parents are? –16F, feels like -41F with the windchill. (That is -27C, feels like -41C. – ironically -41 seem to be where Fahrenheit and Celsius meet.)

Just for fun, here’s a photo from New Year’s Eve in The Hague. Just something burning in the middle of the road. Note all of the red fireworks wrappings in the street.

2013 in review (Or: Not quite as many posts as 2012, but…)

It’s time for the 2013 annual report for my blog! It wasn’t quite a post a day like last year, but I did pretty good…

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 17,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 6 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Chaos (Or: Feeding the birds)

A random shot of someone feeding the birds in a nearby canal in The Hague:

Picture about 4 times as many birds than shown – this was the close-up. There’s even some swans in there waiting to get fed (and of course due to their large size they get first choice at the food!).

Gino’s East (Or: Homer Simpson and pizza)

For the rehearsal  dinner, my brother and his bride chose Gino’s East in St. Charles (Illinois). It’s a pizza place, but they also served us penne pasta, breadsticks, and salad. Yum! And that was before another guest broke out the container of freshly homemade chocolate chip cookies…

They had some pretty interesting pizza, from the classic Chicago style deep dish to the thinner crusts. (While they even had a sausage patty pizza, which included a full size patty as one of its layers, I stuck with the thin crust pizza.) The most interesting and delicious thing was the crust, which was definitely seasoned well.

The restaurant decor itself was pretty interesting. The first thing that caught my eye was the Homer Simpson poster above (made up of individually colored elements, though I forget what they were. Probably scenes or characters from the show).

The other crazy thing was that you were allowed to write on the walls. It did provide character to the place. There were a few places that they asked you to not write on the walls, like the bathroom. The sign there said Don’t graffiti here or similar, which of course someone altered to say Don’t gravity here.
