Underfoot (Or: Neighborhood cat)

I finally got a good picture of the neighborhood cat that I see hanging around.

Just like his yellow coat, he has dark yellow eyes. He doesn’t seem that shy.

The first time I saw him, he was on the nearby sidewalk in front of this house. Half his body was on the grass, facing the house. Most of his tail was on the sidewalk, out straight. I think he was stalking something, since he didn’t move at all. I almost tripped over his tail before I noticed something “yellow” on the sidewalk.

The second time, he darted in front of me from the road across the same sidewalk towards the house – not even a foot away from me. Yeesh!

Freshman (Or: T-Minus 1 day)

I… am tired. I have been running around the campus like a maniac most of the day. The freshman come back tomorrow. I wish I had a few more weeks to work on my projects before they do! But c’est la vie.

In the morning, I hijacked my coworker’s computer (thank you Amy!) as it was connected to the color printer and I have to do at least 325 tri-fold brochures before Saturday’s scavenger hunt.

Somewhere in between my print jobs (25 copies in each group) I got called away to look at the new furniture that was being delivered downstairs in the Learning Commons. It is coming along beautifully after the stupid, heartwrenching flood in June.

New drink (Or: Coffee cubes and milk)

It had been about a month but I finally decided to try Trpana’s idea about milk with “ice” cubes made of coffee.

Not nearly as pretty as Trpana’s coffee cubes!

Actually, last night was my 2nd attempt. The first time, I only put four coffee cubes in, and the coffee doesn’t melt that fast in milk. This time I put the rest of the ice cube tray in – about 7 or 8. It took about 75 minutes and a glass and a half of milk before they finally melted all of the way.

Amother thing to consider is that even though I normally like my coffee black with no milk or sugar added, this experiment could have done with a bit of sugar in the coffee itself when being brewed. A straw is also pretty handy, to stir it up occasionally.

It was an interesting drink… I am not sure if I will have it again right away, but it definitely had its place.

Fridays (Or: A welcome day off)

I took today off, after having night shifts the other four days this week. How nice! Though of course Marco commented to me later about how I was still up and out the door by 8AM to get to the laundromat… but at least I don’t have to do that tomorrow.

Work has been kind of crazy, with various coworkers on vacation. I have spent more time covering the front desk in the last two weeks than the last half a year prior. And it’s less than a week to go before the students come back – eek!  There is always so much to do, and never enough time.

I probably should be somewhat pensive today – since it was my choice to stay in the States until December. You see, if I had gone with the earlier option (leaving at the end of the yearly August-August contract rather than extending it one more semester), I would be leaving for the Netherlands in the next day or two. Admittedly things would have been easier if I had, but that wasn’t information I had at the time. But, tomorrow is 4 months to go (tentatively). So we are almost there.

On a different note, here’s some more local news from New York City. Check out this scaffolding.

Some areas of NYC now support artwork on their scaffolding. You can read more abut it and local law 11.

And on a final note I must add – because it might never happen again! – The Hague looks like it will be warmer than New York this weekend. Tomorrow New York won’t even hit 80F.

In style (Or: Motorcycle hearses)

On my way home today, I passed the local Catholic church. A group of bushes blocks the driveway – so I tend to peek around the corner cautiously to make sure there aren’t any cars coming.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a funeral hearse parked there. But not just any hearse – a motorcycle hearse.

They are based out of East Brunswick, NJ.  I have been there a few times, as I did my Masters at nearby New Brunswick (Rutgers University). Surprisingly I did not see a lot of motorcycles lying in wait outside as I walked past today. There were a lot of cars though, double parked and idle while waiting for the funeral procession.

What a way to go – in style all the way.

Cinnamon (Or: Frozen pretzels at Shoprite)

One of the random snacks that I enjoyed as a kid was a soft pretzel which you put in the microwave for 30 seconds. They come frozen. You get six in a box, as well as a bag of pretzel salt which is a bit thicker than regular table salt. I think you are supposed to wet the pretzel a bit to help it stick. (The most amusing thing is the warning not to use the entire salt packet for one pretzel, as it’s enough for six.) But I just dump a bit of table salt on a plate and duck a bit of pretzel into it. Sometimes I dunk the pretzel in mustard.

I had mentioned to Marco a few weeks ago that I had found these things again. Recently he mentioned wanting to try them with cinnamon, which I thought was… interesting. I really couldn’t envision it.

Well, I forgot that I live in America. If you want a flavor, they’ve probably already thought of it and manufactured it for you.

During today’s trip to Shoprite I looked at the frozen pretzels and realized that they had a cinnamon flavor. Crazy! I didn’t pick up a box yet, but I will before Marco comes. I’ll report back if it’s decent or not…

Countdown (Or: Mars rover Curiosity)

As I have been called the countdown queen for my counting down the days until Marco arrives again (45 days!), I decided to post an interesting image that I saw regarding the landing of the Mars rover Curiosity.

Getty images. Image taken during a meeting before the landing. The marbles look like cherries to me.

Of course, I didn’t see the landing since 1:31AM EST seemed a bit too late for me. Though the media definitely sensationalized this with their “7 minutes of terror”.

However, one can easily catch up on all of the details by visiting the official NASA page.

London (Or: The moon within the Olympic rings)

This picture has been making the rounds across the internet… especially Twitter.

Reuters/Luke MacGregor

The NBC coverage has been…alright, I suppose. But one of the three NBC channels I have only shows boxing (MSNBC), and the second doesn’t usually show Olympics events. And then they have the lovely rule that the best stuff only shows up in primetime – though they aired the run of Pistorius (the double amputee) both live and in primetime. So what gives, NBC. 🙂 Air some other things I want to see stuff live!

But all in all, it’s been a lot of fun. Today’s highlight was watching the men’s 10,000 meters and the final result which was pretty much designed to give you warm fuzzies. Right now the Dutch are on TV… but only because it is women’s volleyball and the other team is American.

Videos (Or: Screencasting and YouTube)

Another first for me. I made a screencasting video and uploaded it on YouTube! Screencasting means the viewer sees whatever is on my computer screen so I can show them how to do a task. (The video was work related so I won’t link to it here. But it was about searching our online catalog for books and journal articles.)

In the end the process was simple enough that I began to wonder why I hadn’t tried it last summer. But oh well – the main reason for getting the videos started was to have them available for the students (and my replacement) after I left this job. All of the software I used was free, though I did borrow a speaker and USB headset from IT.

I used CamStudio, which is similar to Camtasia. This software records what is on your screen, and optionally any audio. Note that audio will increase your file size so if you don’t need it, keep it off. One nice thing was cursor highlighting which makes it easy for the viewer to follow your mouse.

Milestones (Or: 200 posts)

I can’t believe it’s been 200 days since I started this blog. Back on a cold day in early January! The year is quickly coming closer to an end, though there is still a lot of road left to travel, it seems.

The three top posts so far:

A chance meeting (Or: American present, Dutch future) – the story of how Marco and I met in person.

Dutch televisie (Or: Soaking up some Dutch) – various useful television shows you can watch online, usually with Dutch subtitles.

Crazy Dutchies (Or: More Euro 2012 decorations) – Orange, orange, orange. What more can I say?

Top commenter so far:

Bel’ Occhio (a poster living south of Vancouver), with posts of gorgeous flowers, maple walnut cookies, and Chronicles of Oswald, gentleman rabbit. It’s a pretty diverse blog!

Who knows what the next 200 posts will bring. Hopefully more sports recaps from Marco, with the Olympics coming up! 🙂
