Dissecting Google (Or: What kind of information do you need?)

At least this Monday did not see any floods at work. Small things to be thankful for!

I spent most of the afternoon working on a handout for the Forms section in Google Docs, which I and other librarians use for some library related things (reserving group study rooms and requesting journal articles, at the moment). I am a fan of Google forms, since it’s a free option which also sends you email updates if someone submits a form. You can use it to collect all sorts of information, from the best time(s) for a group to meet up to quizzes, to comments and suggestions, and everything in between.  The only thing I don’t like is the lack of formatting (bold, italics, and similar).

The reason I am working on the handout is because I have a two hour presentation to give on Wednesday to some faculty. I am not quite sure how I can make it last a whole two hours, but we’ll see…

Of course while working on the handout, I had a tab open to keep track of the Euro 2012 scores. I forgot how much I missed that perk with the World Cup. I definitely work best if I can keep a “fun” tab open that I can stare at for a minute every so often. Ultra mini breaks!

Reflections (Or: On days and posts)

This is my 151st post. I have completed 150 blogging days. It’s amazing how time flies. And it’s amazing how slow time is.

I was always known as someone who loved countdowns. I am always counting down until the next time I see Marco. Doubly so without the usual summer trip to NL this year. Mostly because it will be so weird to not be there on Marco’s birthday in July.

49 days until Marco’s birthday.

106 days until Marco comes back (give or take a week).

168 days until Thanksgiving (when I visit my parents again).

195 days until Marco and I leave for NL.

208 days until I watch couches burn.

I can’t wait for the moment when I realize I want time to slow down forever, since I am finally with Marco and not counting down towards Marco time.

Watery Mondays (Or: A year’s work)

Sometimes you just have a day where — at the end of the day — you still can’t believe it happened. It still feels a bit unreal.

One of the things that I am in charge of is the Learning Commons, which happens to be on the lower level. And over the weekend, it flooded with about 2 1/2 inches of water. The entire room, the long hallway outside of it, everything. Of course it happened on a Saturday – so I found out about it 48 hours after the fact, when most things (not all things, as I was to find out) were dry. And musty.

We still aren’t quite sure what happened – but the rumor is that the sprinkler system malfunctioned upstairs, sending a wall of water cascading down the elevator shaft. With nowhere else to go, it went down into the lower level. (In fact, it wasn’t the first time that room flooded. Years ago when it housed the journals and microfilm, we dealt with 10″ of water in there when a main pipe line burst. But that was before my time.)

Summer thunderstorms (Or: Alert me)

It was an interesting morning. I walked past the data room at work and heard a rather loud noise.

Turned out to be the server. We entered the room and it was HOT. The air conditioning had turned off overnight it seems. Didn’t see any issues after it was turned back on (by the IT department) at least. But still…poor server.

We’re in the beginning stages of another summer thunderstorm. There have been many lately thanks to the hot temperatures. Today’s high was 90f (32c), feeling like 97f (36c). The latest thunderstorm just began in the last minute or two, though it has been windy for the last hour or so. They told us to expect winds up to 60mph (96km/h).

That reminds me of a storm that we had a few days ago – we had emergency alerts taking over our TVs for most of the day (including 3 in 5 minutes! It was insane), though nothing ended up happening in my neighborhood. In America, the National Weather Service can decide to send out an alert, which takes over the programming and changes the screen to black with information and some loud beeps to get your attention. They then tell you about the situation, including where it is and what to expect. At least we don’t get too many tornadoes in New York!

Speaking of alerts, the security department at work told us to expect some alerts through our “beacon system” this afternoon. I wish they had mentioned that that would mean that their alert system would be taking over the public computers without warning:

Just imagine the red ALERT! flashing every second or so for maximum scary effect.

Of course I found it amusing that this alert only appeared on the public computers, not the staff computers. Maybe they don’t want to warn us about our impending doom…

Tracking money (Or: Where will it go next)

One of the more random things that I have seen since moving here is a few rare occurrences of dollar bills tracked through Where’s George?, a website which allows you to track where your dollar bills (and other American currency) have been.

So far I have found 6 registered dollar bills. None of them have had any further hits after I registered that I found the bill.

Serial number removed for George’s protection 🙂 Around the seal, it reads “Track this bill wheresgeorge.com”. The two arrows point to the serial number (top) and series number (bottom). On the right side it says “This is registered bill”. There are different stamps out there. This one is pretty elaborate.

In case you are wondering, the top user has entered over 2 million bills and had hits on 371,000 of them. (He actually stamps new bills and sends them on their way, which obviously raises the counts a lot. Most people just find already stamped bills and mark that they were found again.)

Here’s a snippet from his website mentioned above:

“I am catching a lot of the local people looking at me out of the corner of their eyes and several of the local elderly have been giving me the Anti-Evil-Eye sign behind my back.

Lately, the bank in Wattsburg always seems to be closed when I pull up in my car (even at noon) and Bill Spenser at the Keystone station is getting tired of selling me gasoline 6 or 8 Georges at a time.”

Since it is technically illegal to deface American currency, the Where’s George website does have its own rules section to try and prevent liability on their end. You can also read more at the Wikipedia page,  which states that bills which are entered into the system but not marked are called “stealths” and that most people mark the bills to increase the hit rate. So the consensus on the Where’s George? website’s end is that people are only marking the bills to get more hits – they themselves do not encourage it.

It’s odd that I didn’t see many of these marked bills in Chicago, only when I moved here. It’s an interesting tactic, and apparently Canadians have a similar site called Where’s Willy?

Errand day (Or: One melted laundry basket)

I randomly took the day off today. At least, I took it off from work — not errands. I walked downtown to do a load of laundry, went to the bank, vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, and went to the library. A few days ago I had received an email from the local library that both of the Dutch books arrived (mentioned here). As they are closed Sat-Sun-Mon for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, today was the last chance to nab them.

After I picked up my holds I took them to the seating area to read the first part of My ‘Dam Life. What I read before I left the library seemed pretty interesting, so hopefully I will be able to spend some time reading more over the weekend.

Have you ever seen a melted laundry basket?

Waiting, waiting (Or: Random bus observations)

How does one work 9 hours and manage not to get more than 5 minutes total on their own project? (Answer: It happens. I am sure I am not the only one.)

1. One of the more annoying things about working a later schedule (besides working a later schedule!) is that the time between when my shift ends and when the bus arrives is longer.

2. Today’ s total wait: 45 minutes

3. Bus drivers really know how to drive slow when they want to. I thought there was no way we would miss that green light (on an internal road with no one around, too), but we did.

4. The person sitting in the row in front of me put their seat back (this is fine, they weren’t directly in front of me). But this did mean I could see their phone. Over about 6-7 minutes, they set 3 phone calls from “Job” to ignore. I can’t even comprehend that. Although maybe they had already worked 12 days straight and work was calling to ask them to come in tomorrow too…

5. All of the sudden I realized the windshield wipers were in use. Oh boy, rain for the 4th day straight? But it didn’t seem too bad.

6. As I got to my stop and was getting off the bus, the passenger in front of me ignored a 4th phone call from “Job”. Heh.

7. Hello drizzle. Halfway home, it starts raining harder. Hello power walking.

8. Cold, wet. But then, home. Warm. A late dinner. Good times.

zondag (Or: Graduations and soap box trials)

Today (zondag/Sunday) is my college’s graduation. Since I am an administrator, I am expected to go. Not only go, but walk, and wear a cap and gown, and. . .

Anyway, I thought you would enjoy a picture of (some of) it, though keep in mind I generally don’t pull it out of its bag to get the wrinkles out. It doesn’t seem to make too much of a difference to me.

The cap and gown I will wear, with the rules for properly showing off the academic hood (the part that hangs behind you).

The red is for Rutgers University, where I got my Masters. The yellow is for the type of Masters I received (Library science). I don’t have a PhD or doctorate, so I do not have the fancy robes you might see.

Also today was the soap box derby trials, where you race little cars down a big hill. Over and over and over. They block off the main road every year for this. I took a few pictures:

The hill they ride down. You can barely see it, but where the guy is standing is where the finish line is. The rest of the space is just for you to slow down (though the cars should have brakes).

A view of the soap box derby cars themselves, with a new race about to begin.

I don’t have any experience or knowledge of these. My brother raced mini cars in the pine wood derby when he was in Boy Scouts, though.

zaterdag (Or: Flying from LaGuardia to Newark)

It’s been quite a random zaterdag (Saturday) already.

1. Shoprite trip — for random items including shaved steak and a refill on my flossers. You can buy packages with like 30 flossing heads in them. A bit of a panic for that, since I couldn’t find it right away. I hated flossing until I found these things (they look like a toothbrush) because it is the only thing that could easily floss my teeth.

2. Trip to the library to return 1Q84, which was a whopping 925 pages long and I never really opened. It’s by Haruki Murakami, one of my favorite authors. My favorite book, Kafka on the Shore (English version) is set in a small town library. I really should have picked out something shorter.

3. Put holds on two books in nearby libraries. Culture and customs of the Netherlands and My ‘Dam Life. I am grabbing the second one with some reservations, since most of the reviews weren’t that good. But libraries are free, so what the heck. I did enjoy The UnDutchables when I read it a few years ago, even if it is biased and exaggerated.

Why did I put holds on two books? I have a 4 day weekend coming up (Friday vacation, Monday is Memorial Day) and I figured in theory I might be bored and in the mood to read.

5. For a late Mother’s Day present I got my mom a downloadable version of King’s Quest (4, 5, 6) from gog.com. I have never used them before but she was able to download it and check out all 3 games. It was only $10 – worth it for 3 games that play on Windows 7.

6. Watched the NY Rangers beat the Devils, 3-0. Woot. They now lead the series 2-1. The coolest thing that came out of this game was Delta airline’s offer to fly Rangers fans from LaGuardia to Newark Airport for the game (a 17 minute flight). I wonder if they served drinks…

Blood pressure (Or: Raving lunatics acting like monkeys)

Again it was an eventful morning, mostly considering I live in a rather rural area. Apparently they were repaving the main road around the entrance to the psychiatric center. Since traffic in both directions only had one lane available, there was one construction worker on our side with a “slow” sign and another at the end of the construction with a “stop” sign to prevent oncoming traffic.

It was a bit… interesting getting past the construction, since there isn’t much room for both them to do their work and us to squeeze past. At one point the bus stopped and backed up, getting dangerously close to the construction equipment. Just picture me staring out the edge of the window, wondering when I should speak up that we were about to smash into it.
