Two weeks (Or: Final week to prepare)

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. There’s only 14 days before work ends and 17 days until the flight to the Netherlands. Kind of hard to realize, but it works for me!

(7 days until Marco and Roger arrive next Friday night!)

I received news today that my replacement accepted the job offer and will start in mid January two days before Spring classes start. It’s a bit later than one could hope, but I only started about 9 days before Fall classes, so I only had an extra week. (Although most of that week was spent cleaning the area underneath my desk. My predecessor was a bit of a hoarder, although she seemed sweet the few times I met her.)

I am looking forward to later this weekend and early next week, when the weather in the New York area inexplicably warms a bit. It will only last about three days though.

I have been pretty lazy since I got back from my parents’ house. Much more lazy than Marco is currently. He has been working on setting up the new furniture he bought at Ikea. As this is my final weekend alone (scary thought) — at some point I need to do laundry, as well as turn in my loose change at the bank and deposit the money into the account, and also go to Shoprite a few times. (Once for myself, once to get snacks for students studying for the upcoming finals and extended hours at the library.)

I also definitely need to start throwing out some more stuff. I didn’t really do any of that this week!

Dutch MVV (Or: A slight delay)

So… today I went to New York City to pick up my MVV sticker. But it seems in the end it is not that simple. I should have known, after the first trip…

But we’re not in trouble at all – I just have to go back next week. AGAIN.

A few weeks ago, Marco received the approval letter (in Dutch) from the IND. After this, I expected a letter from the Washington consulate (in English), as that is what the last official correspondence had said – when I was approved, they would send me a letter by mail.

But that letter never arrived. After a week, I called the Washington consulate. The lady on the other end was confused (I think she believed I was the Dutch national calling for the American referent) but we eventually sorted it out. I asked her if I needed the letter or if I could go pick up my MVV sticker from the NYC consulate. She said that as long as I made an appointment and brought along the items requested (and I think this is where I made my fatal mistake of thinking she made items specificed in the Dutch letter Marco received) I could go there and pick up my MVV sticker

I had an appointment for 9:20am. When I got there, I was told I needed other documents then I was expecting. Specifically, I need to do the following things again:

1) fill out an MVV application form (already done)

2) bring along a passport photo (already done)

3) show my original single status record and hand over a copy (already done)

4) show a copy of Marco’s passport (already done, but we were told to expect this one, so I was prepared with that)

The passport photos is what caught me – why would I expect to have to hand over another set? Didn’t I already give them a form? Why didn’t they just have my fill out two forms and turn over two photos instead of one? Why didn’t they ask for multiple copies of things back in September? So that was another $15 for the photos down the drain. (I guess this was all explained in the letter I never received)…

They also actually physically took my passport. Apparently they don’t do MVV stickers at the NYC consulate (although they said it was just a visa sticker – I don’t get the MVV sticker until I get to the Netherlands I was told). So the passport needs to be mailed to the Washington consulate, and then back to New York City… that takes about 5-6 business days. So early next week. Still time – no problem.

But still – what kind of logic is this? Sheesh.

Errands (Or: Preparing for the big move)

My stay in the suburbs of Chicago was pretty nice. It wasn’t as smooth a plane ride as it was on the way over, but it was quick and I managed to get an earlier train than I could have hoped for otherwise to get home.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed day to fly after Thanksgiving, I do heartily recommend the day after. Security was about 5 minutes (only delayed because they had to re-calibrate the machine) and the plane was barely one third full.

Today’s errands included:

1. closing out my credit card with Chase bank completely.

2. changing the address for my bank account and debit card. I am going to keep it open for at least three more years, as I will be paying my student loans off from that account. I have Marco’s address memorized, thanks to the postcard blitz in June and July.

3. Wandering down to the dentist to confirm my appointment for this coming Thursday. I am cutting it a bit close to the moving date (in terms of getting a reimbursement for the insurance payment), but I am not sure exactly when I will be able to get a new dentist in NL.

Random moment: I was sitting in my apartment this morning and I heard a key being slid into the lock for my front door. It turned out to be my landlady, who didn’t realize I had returned from Chicago already. She was bringing a potential tenant (an older woman) over to show her the apartment.  I was glad I hadn’t messed up the place too much when I arrived last night…

Countdowns (Or: The passage of time)

Yesterday I helped my mother sort old family pictures (barely making a dent in the huge piles!) But one of them I found was of Oreo as a puppy. Before she learned how to sit properly…

She didn’t get much bigger than that in the last 14 or so years, although she did get… heavier. We just say she is big boned.

In other news, the WordPress countdown widget is now under a month, and is counting down days!

Yay…

It’s official! (Or: Plane tickets to NL purchased)

Marco, Roger, and I booked our plane tickets to the Netherlands! They are going to arrive on the 7th of December, and all three of us are going back on December 17th. So it seems my blog countdown was right all along – I am setting foot in the Netherlands on the 18th.

Of course, the cheapest way to do it was through Aer Lingus, as they do not penalize you for buying “only” a one way ticket (see an earlier post here). So each flight has a layover in Dublin (for 6 hours and 4 hours!). But we are leaving early enough before Christmas that we won’t have to pay an arm and a leg — my ticket was only $584. It goes up $100 the next day, and then $200 each for the next few days before stabilizing around $1050ish that weekend. Yowch.

We also booked a NYC hotel room for two days – Dec 15 and 16 – so we are actually leaving my apartment for the final time on the 15th, not the 17th. That way we can just go straight to JFK from NYC itself, rather than deal with a really long, tiring train ride to get there.

In a more emotional sense, I definitely had watery eyes after the tickets were purchased. FINALLY! It’s been a long time coming. And of course, the way my body operates: stressful situation resolved? Let’s bring on a cold! Figures. 😛

Moving (Or: Nagging thoughts)

Both Marco and I are getting a bit antsy. The to do lists are looming, with things like closing my credit card account (but merely changing the address on my debit card, to keep paying my student loans) to signing up for short term health insurance, and everything in between. But nothing we can’t handle.

Actually, it’s kind of nice. I had set up a “Stuff to buy & do” document on Google Docs last year — or Google Drive, if you prefer the new name. As it allows simultaneous collaboration, Marco could see my real time typing and vice versa. You will even see a little bit of color to highlight where the other person’s mouse cursor is.

At work, I have started to prepare for my replacement although we are not sure who it will be yet. Little things like typing up notes to help get the person up to speed, or removing my name off of the handouts and making the contact information a bit more generic. I think the most random thing I did this week so far was updating the library Twitter page, so that it uses the newish header feature.

But it still feels all too normal to me, not that that is a problem. Maybe things will change after Thanksgiving. We’ll see.

Moving (Or: Things to throw away)

So, it is slowly starting to sink in. Slowly. In about 5 weeks, I will be in the Netherlands. For good.

On Sunday, I finally got inspiration to start throwing things out. Mind you, I am not really a pack rat, or at least haven’t been since I moved to the east coast in 2008 (just so my parents don’t raise an eyebrow, I threw in that clarification). For at least half a year after I moved here, my “kitchen table” was a (large) microwave box. You get used to things – mostly. The current “kitchen table” is a rather low, small table which still allows me to sit on the ground when I eat. I like that.

Most of my “junk” is in the aptly-named junk drawers and in my closet. On Sunday, I threw out 3 trash bags. I would guess that I have probably 5 or 6 bags to go — not including some things that won’t fit in a trash bag, like old luggage or an airbed I used before having my new bed delivered a few months after I moved in.

And then the next task would be seeing just how heavy the luggage I am taking with will be… Hmm.

On the IND (Or: Applying for a Dutch MVV as an American)

The following is a timeline for what Marco and I had to do when we were forced to get a MVV. In July we found out on the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) website that the law for “Family Migration Measures” was changing.

That law said that effective Oct 1 we would need to already be married before I moved to the Netherlands. As we want to get married on Dutch soil, we decided to submit a request for an MVV (provisional residence permit) to get into the system prior to the law changing. Once started, MVV requests take up to three months. We had to get a move on as I wanted to move in mid December. Of course, it’s quite possible the law will be repealed due to a new government, but for now it is currently in effect.

[Note: MVV forms are generally found on the CONSULATE’S webpages, not the IND’s official page. As the American consulate doesn’t have one, we downloaded this copy from minbuza.nl.]

TL;DR:
MVV request submitted (to NYC consulate): Wednesday, September 5 (i.e. before Oct 1! yay!)
MVV request approved (by the IND): Thursday, November 8

Weds July 18 – We found out the law for “Family Migration Measures” was changing.

Gezinsmigratiemaatregelen (Or: A bump in the road)

The above subject means “Family Migration Measures”. Or, in simple terms “One big headache”. You see, the previous Dutch government passed a law stating that to form a family – i.e. what Marco and I were officially doing — required both parties to already be married before the foreigner moved to the Netherlands. Originally it was supposed to take effect July 1, which was delayed. But in mid-July we got word that it would take effect in October 1. But my last day of work is December 14, and I cannot leave any earlier. Although there has been some dispute, the law is still technically in effect.

So, briefly: as we wanted to get married in the Netherlands in 2013, Marco and I had to get into the IND’s system before October 1. The only way to do that was to turn in an MVV form (temporary residence permit request) prior to that date, even though Americans are normally exempt. Since Americans are exempt, it caused a lot of headaches trying to get the process rolling as US consulates don’t really handle many requests.

The MVV application was officially received at IND on September 3. On November 9, Marco received word that our MVV form had received approval. So it is official – after getting through the first of many red tape situations, I can now move to the Netherlands!

Niki’s thoughts:

All of this craziness went down in mid-July about a week before his birthday. Twice IND told us I had to take the civic integration exam if I wanted to submit an MVV (Americans are normally exempt from that as well). So Marco dutifully paid 350 euros for a test, and I studied my heart out for three weeks and sacrificed sleep. After three weeks or so, we were given official confirmation that we did not have to take the test. He is still waiting for his refund.

In total, our lives were pretty much hell for 6 weeks until we were able to submit the form in early September. As all sources of information said Americans did not have to apply in advance before the move, we were caught unprepared in terms of documentation.

The upsides included:
1) My spoken Dutch briefly improved while studying for the test, but it went downhill again after
2) We started videochatting daily (as we needed to speak Dutch) rather than just typing messages, and ended up continuing that tradition afterwards
3) The permanent residency permit should come a bit faster as we already have approval for the MVV

Of course, it seems so long ago already, as it is already November. But I can say we were definitely getting a bit nervous the last week or so, as we haven’t been able to book any plane tickets yet. We will this week – we are hoping to get confirmation from the Washington consulate sent to my mail address, in addition to the letter Marco already received at his Dutch address.

Marco’s thoughts:

Ugh. This entire process annoyed me so much.
Even worse, it mad me feel guilty since one of the reasons we decided to live in the Netherlands was because it would be so easy for an American (or any 1st world country citizen) to move here.
Technically up until October 1st she would have been allowed to just walk into the country without any additional papers required and then just go to the IND the next morning and tell them to sign her up for “family migration” (at which point she would need the same papers & documents we used now but we could’ve done it all together and she’d be already here..)

Nobody, including the IND knows why they pushed this rule through.. well it’s because of the right wing party that was briefly in our government, but there is no logical reason to have it apply to *everyone*.
At least we knew they would grant her the permit.
No reason to deny it to a person you’d usually welcome with open arms.
So all in all it was just a small bump in the road, about the size of a Dutch mountain. 🙂

Still..I was getting anxious. I had just spent half the day whining to Roger through email that it was taking so long. Then I arrived home and saw the letter. And all frustration was forgotten 🙂

So go find your old ‘Europe’ albums. The final countdown has started! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Choices (Or: Weighing the decision to move to the Netherlands)

In addition to the laundry diagram that Marco found, another old thing that he found was the pro and con lists he and I made back in July 2011 when I visiting. They related to the decision of moving to the Netherlands or him moving to United States.

It wasn’t until September 2011, though, that we made the final decision to have me move to the Netherlands. This was just the first of many discussions about it.
