Music (Or: Amphitheatre where my parents live)

It seems like life is returning to a bit of normalcy this week after getting back from Chicago last week. Jet lag is, of course, quite evil. I slept 12 hours (9:30PM to 10AM) the first night back in The Hague. The second night sleep was very difficult to come by…

On our last full day at my parents, Marco and I went for a long walk, exploring the local woods and then the recreation center and townhall. Our adventure took us past the local amphitheatre, which was built after I moved to New York so I had not seen it yet. Amphitheatres are open air theaters.

Iron Man 3 (Or: A spoiler free post)

On Wednesday night, Marco Roger and I went to the Pathé theater in The Hague to see Iron Man 3. For some reason, the movie came to the Netherlands and other places a week before America. I won’t complain! It was a bit easier to ignore the Dutch subtitles at the bottom this time. (I don’t have a problem with them, but they are a bit distracting as I try to analyze the sentence structure.)

Oh, and I also decided that Maltesers (a British candy) aren’t nearly as good as Whoppers (an American candy which is a bit crunchier). It is the same concept, though.

In the Netherlands, “Despicable Me” is entitled “Verschrikkelijke Ikke”, which I don’t remember how to translate except that it’s more of a “kid speak” type title.

It was a pretty good movie – it showed more of the human side of Tony Stark (Iron Man), although personally I liked the first movie the best. Although that was because I didn’t know just how sarcastic the Stark character was and so I was new to the character.

One thing I liked a lot about this movie was the comic relief character (you will see who/what I mean). Also the younger character had some funny lines as well.

After the movie we walked a bit down the street and came across one of the outdoor café areas. It was too late for anything to be open (11:30ish) but there were still people wandering around:

Over twenty years (Or: WWE in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Earlier in the year we found out that WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) was coming to the Netherlands. It has been about 21 or 22 years since they have been in this country. So Marco took the day off and he and I went to Rotterdam in the afternoon to do a bit of shopping before the show at night, though we didn’t end up buying anything.

First we went to Selexyz, listed as “one of the largest bookstores in the Netherlands”. The arrangement of the store was pretty interesting… you had an elevator that either went up 3-4 floors or down to the basement. But each of the floors had mini-levels, with stairs connecting them. So Marco and I went all the way to the top (as he has done with Roger many times before) and slowly worked our way down taking the stairs. But they didn’t really have anything of interest in the Talen section (languages)

After that, we headed off to the MediaMarkt, which also boasted that it was one of the largest in the Netherlands, if not the largest. We were amused by what we saw:

WWE promotion sign in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Apparently there was a WWE autograph signing, although the names there aren’t the higher level wrestlers. Out of curiosity we went upstairs to where it was at, but the place was packed. (Good luck to the shoppers who actually wanted to find a product up there!)

After that, we walked back to Rotterdam Central Station to meet up with Roger, and then took the tram onwards to where the event was taking place. After having dinner at Subway, we went on to the arena, called Ahoy Rotterdam, or simply Ahoy. The name reminds me of Chips Ahoy cookies…

The wrestling event itself was pretty good. Some other friends of ours arrived so in total we had 7 seats together. The crowd wasn’t quite as vocal as I could have hoped, and at times it was hard to see (sucks being short!) but otherwise it was a lot of fun.

Zebra rug (Or: The butt of a joke?)

The only thing that can be said when suddenly, unexpectedly encountering this:

“Whoa.”

I suppose it would have been a bit better if we hadn’t been treated to the butt. It even has a cute little tail.

365 days of blog posts

I started this blog back on January 7, 2012. I have written a blog post a day detailing various things – though not all of them were about the Netherlands or related to the Dutch. A lot of New York themed posts seemed to slip in as well…

Here are some of my more highly visited posts which are Dutch related:

1. With the highest amount of views: Dutch gourmetten (Or: An exercise in hungry patience)

2. Albert Heijn (Or: Glad I don’t need to ship yellow mustard in)

3. Browsing (Or: European and American shoe sized compared)

4. Speculoos (Or: Chopped Grill Masters)

5. Colonization (Or: Dutch is the best choice!)

6. Streets (Or: Wandering through the Hague)

7. Dutch televisie (Or: Soaking up some Dutch)

And I will leave you with a picture of a freshly baked stroopwafel:

Note. I will no longer post every day. Probably. Maybe. ;p

Tenth day (Or: Something for my dad)

Here’s a quick look back at the brief weekend trip the three of us took to New York City right before we returned to the Netherlands. One thing we stumbled on was A Christmas Story musical, which is the movie I mentioned on Monday after Roger got me the DVD. Dad and I used to watch it every Christmas, as it was on a 24 hour marathon on the TBS channel…

Notice the lampshade in the second image. ;p Marco and I had a quieter day today. Earlier in the afternoon we went to a few different department stores so I would have an idea of what they sell, although mostly what they sell right now is winter clothes and jackets which isn’t what I am looking for.

We also took advantage of the late shopping hours that occur in the Hague on Thursday nights and went to pick up groceries for a late dinner. Afterwards, we enjoyed a glass of white beer (Korenwolf brand) while watching the Incredible Hulk. Another movie to catch me up to Marco’s geekiness. ;p Slowly but surely… but I wouldn’t be too worried until I start reading his comics!

Wrestling (Or: Ring of Honor and WWE)

From Marco…

Sunday is our last full day in the States.
So obviously we’re spending it at home, taking it easy, enjoy a good home made meal, right?

Wrong. Today we’re overindulging on wrestling. Lots of it.
And the good stuff too. We’re attending two ‘pay-per-views’ on one day. Six hours in total.
Meaning “the important shows of a wrestling federation”

First, in the early afternoon we’ll be seated in the 2nd row for Ring of Honor’s “Final Battle 2012“.
It’s billed as “Doomsday” which of course is a nice tip of the hat to the Mayan thing..
But well..it’s going to be fitting as we get some hellacious matches.
Niki doesn’t know many guys that are appearing (none except 2 names) but when she saw my enthusiasm for things like the American Wolves reunion, the 3-threat tag match involving the Briscoes and of course the ‘ladder war’ match between arch enemies El Generico (the Generic Luchadore) and ” wrestling’s worst nightmare” Kevin Steen, she agreed to go (I also promised to protect her from any blood, sweat or wrestlers flying around)

But the fun doesn’t end there. After the show is over, we make our way to Brooklyn for WWE’s TLC ppv.
WWE is obviously a size bigger than ROH, and they themed their ppv event ‘Tables Ladders and Chairs’  (oh my!) We won’t be on the 2nd row, but still have great seats.
There’ll be a variety of fun matches. One where tables are legal to use, another one features chairs and well..one of them where all 3 of them are legal 🙂 Now I know you might think this is all very brutal. But no worries. There’s actual wrestling happening too. 3 great matches that should feature lots of flying, jumping and wrenching of body parts. Yay. Since Niki watches WWE on a regular basis, she knows who’s who and why they are fighting. That always helps to make it more entertaining 🙂

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. I’m lucky Niki likes a lot of the things I like. Sports, wrestling, and food *giggle*
So after this crazy day, we’ll get ready to fly back to the Netherlands on Monday.
I’m sure you’ll hear all about that in the next few updates 🙂

Disconnected (Or: Lack of internet)

Yesterday night I called to disconnect the internet, effective Friday morning. Thankfully I have had it for three and a half years, so I don’t have to worry about an early termination fee! Originally I thought I would have to cancel it last week, as Verizon agents said typically they want their router back. Most people request that a shipping label be sent to their house, but that takes time to arrive in the mail. And the label cannot be generated until the account is terminated… Coupled with a less than quick mail service (things tend to take a while to get into my hands) I thought I would have to cancel things much earlier.

But in the end I made some calls and figured out exactly what Verizon stores the router could be sent back to. One of my coworkers graciously volunteered to return the router to the store in person for me. One less thing to worry about! A few more to go.

It is going to be weird not to have any internet. As a society, we have definitely gotten used to internet at our fingertips at any given moment, although I only have a prepay phone (not a smartphone) and an iTouch, so I am not as embedded as some people are outside of the home. While I will have internet at work, after Friday afternoon there will be no more of that. Thankfully we are staying in the New Yorker hotel near Madison Square garden this weekend and they have a free check-in service for flights, so we are covered there!

Lower Manhattan (Or: On my way to Penn Station)

So on Friday I went into New York City to pick up my Dutchies from the Penn Station, as their flight was coming in from JFK. I ended up hitching a ride with a coworker who goes into the city every weekend to take care of her mother-in-law.  We left home for the city at 5PM.

The interesting thing was we made it into the city fairly quickly – maybe a half hour or so. But we ended the city via the George Washington Bridge, so near 180th street or so. But as we needed to get to Chinatown (near the southern tip of Manhattan) we had a-ways to go on the Henry Hudson Parkway. The traffic was definitely the heaviest near the top of Manhattan, but the views of the Hudson river and New Jersey on the other side at night were spectacular. (For that matter, George Washington Bridge also looked pretty when lit up.)

After about 90th street or so, the traffic eased up slightly. By the time we got to 34th street, traffic had begun to move at a mostly steady clip, only slowing down for the various exits. Although I was headed for 34th street & 7th avenue, it is too much of a pain for her to exit at that point when she really needed to go to Chinatown instead. So she ended up exiting on Canal Street and heading east to Chinatown, letting me off at 5th avenue.

After about 5 or so minutes getting my bearings, I began to walk north through the named streets (not even at 2nd street yet). When I hit 4th street, I found my way blocked by the Washington Square park, so I decided to cut across it rather than going around. I did get a nice picture of the Christmas tree there, from a distance:

Christmas tree at Washington Square NYC

I kept walking north until 14th street, before I headed west to 6th avenue. I took the F/M orange line to 34th street, and then walked west to Penn Station. (All of those Rangers games over the years definitely helped me get my bearings! Thanks Roger! ♥)

After that, it was just a matter of waiting around in the NJTransit area for about 10 minutes before the Dutchies arrived. Just in time too – we had about 6 minutes to get the next train. This was the last train to get before we would have had to wait an hour at the transfer point. But we made it!

Dogs (Or: New York Oktoberfest

In October I went with my coworker to the New York Oktoberfest in Bear Mountain. Lots of fun was had, and lots of beer was drunk.

But one thing that was very surprising was the amount of dogs that were at this event. Easily dozens – from very small breeds to very large breeds. (And sadly one small breed that was veryyy overweight.)

Here were a few dog pictures that my coworker took:

tired dog at New York Oktoberfest

Possibly my favorite dog that I saw that day. The poor thing was so tired. Its owner was waiting in line for a beer refill. Every minute or so the line would advance, and the owner would tug on its leash to get the dog to move. It eventually would move the required few feet – and then plop down again tiredly after. Repeat a dozen times.

For this picture, I liked the dog framed against the human walking past in a blur. I actually saved it from the delete button on her camera, I liked it that much. 🙂
